Ethical Electronics Recycling
American Retroworks West was a partnership, active from 2007 until 2020, between a nationally-recognized electronics recycler, a women-owned cooperative in the mountains of Sonora Mexico, and a digital divide program in Arizona. All were board members of the non-profit FairTradeRecycling.org
Our mission was to provide affordable TV and computer recycling, affordable computers for poor schools, jobs for Mexican families (in Mexico), and the best available environmental practices. We gave credit for good items, charged for responsible recycling of end-of-life items, and accepted scrap for free. After 13 years, Retroworks de Mexico has closed. But we did so without abandoning a single CRT tube - they were all recycled successfully as fluxing agent at a copper smelter. |
Our Vermont operation continues to expand, opening in Brockton Massachusetts, and setting up new partners in North Africa and West Africa with the same type of fair trade programs that were proven effective in Mexico. Visit goodpointrecycling.net and fairtraderecycling.net for more information. |
